The goal of addiction treatment is to assist in the process of recovery. The word recover in
Webster's Dictionary goes something like this : to cover again or anew, to get back, regain, to bring
back to normal position or condition, to save from loss and restore to Usefulness. The word
recovery is defined as: the act, process, or an instance of recovering.
Those that experience Horse Therapy 4 U, I see as brave, confused, open, wondering, scared, and
looking for a better way to live life clean and sober. And yes, they can find recovery with horses
because action , participation, tears, and laughter are all a part of the process of horse therapy.
The first issue some clients work through is their fear of horses. This is the easiest of all fears to
walk through because the horses are all about unconditional love. They want what you want, Love,
Trust, the feeling of Safety and to be treated with respect. Once a person connects with the pure
nature of the horse , miracles can happen and do happen.
Horse live in the moment, in the here and now and respond to that instantly. The horse comes from
the feeling place, the energy place, and what the client is feeling and reacting or responding to helps
the horse and myself to act accordingly. Most human interactions are clouded with biases and
judgment, causing us not to see things clearly to help ourselves.
My exercises are all working with the horse on the ground. The exercises are from the 12 steps of
recovery that work hand and hoof with people working a 12 step recovery program. I wrote " Hoof
Beats to Recovery", with Ava Roberts and it has proven to be very successful with recovery clients.
The exercises provide the opportunity to bring about self-awareness and healing. The horses assist
by their response, movements and reactions to the client. The horses' body language really stands
out to me and the client because of their size being a very large visual. This is why when the client
can see the changes and how the horse responds to them, questions are asked that relate back to
them, their life, and relationships. This visual leaves a lasting impression on them.
